Discovering the Charm of Savonlinna

I have a «Bucket list» on my mobile phone – an app – and one destination that has been on this app for many years is Savonlinna, in eastern part of Finland. This summer I could mark the destination for «visited» in my app…

During my visit to the enchanting lakeside town of Savonlinna, nestled on the shores of Lake Saimaa in eastern Finland, I was captivated by its serene beauty, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere. The weather was warm and pleasant, adding a golden glow to the city’s picturesque streets and tranquil waters. What made the experience even more enjoyable was the peaceful ambiance—there were just enough fellow travelers to feel the city’s pulse, but not so many that it felt crowded. I was here both for pleasure as a tourist, and also for producing a Savonlinna walking tour for the VoiceMap app.

My journey began at Kauppatori, the lively market square that has been the heart of Savonlinna for generations. From there, I wandered across charming pedestrian bridges that span the shimmering lake, and strolled through quiet streets lined with beautifully preserved wooden buildings. Each corner seemed to whisper stories from the past, blending seamlessly with the town’s modern rhythm.

I have a little confession to make… I am diabetic, but when I visit Finland, I have to eat their locally produced ice cream – also in Karelia. In Finland they also have vegetarian ice cream, which actually tastes good (…!…). Try it when you get a chance!

One of the highlights on my tour was Riihisaari, a peaceful island where historic wooden boats and engaging museum exhibits offered a glimpse into the region’s maritime heritage. I also passed the Savonlinna Theatre, admired elegant lakeside villas, and learned about the town’s deep connection to Saint Olaf of Norway—a fascinating link to Nordic history.

The walk culminated at the majestic Olavinlinna Castle, the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing. Its dramatic silhouette against the lake is unforgettable, and today it hosts one of the world’s most unique opera festivals, drawing artists and audiences from around the globe. I took a boat trip in the afternoon at the lake, and lucky for me it passed just behind the castle walls. Savonlinna left a lasting impression on me. Its blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and peaceful atmosphere made it one of the most memorable stops on my journey. I regret that I was only driving through – I should definately spend more than just one day there. I wholeheartedly wish to go back—especially when the sun is shining and the town reveals its quiet magic.
