Over the years, I’ve explored many Nordic towns and cities, but Malmö surprised me in a way few places have. Beneath its modern image lies a city shaped by centuries of shifting identities, dramatic political change, international trade, and remarkable resilience. What began as a fishing settlement on the Baltic grew into a Danish stronghold, became Swedish in 1658, and evolved into one of Scandinavia’s most fascinating urban landscapes.
I was in Malmö to create another VoiceMap audio tour, and on this tour, I’m inviting you to follow the route I walked while discovering Malmö’s stories, landmarks, and hidden connections. Along the way, I’ll share what caught my attention, what fascinated me, and the historical layers that turned an ordinary stroll through the city into a journey through more than 700 years of history.
I began walking at Stortorget, the city’s grand central square, where a medieval monastery once stood before making way for Malmö’s civic heart. From there, I did explore the narrow streets of the Old Town, visit the magnificent Sankt Petri Church, wander beside canals that once formed part of the city’s defenses, and uncover stories of merchants, monarchs, reformers, and entrepreneurs who transformed Malmö into a Baltic powerhouse.
As the tour continue, you’ll see the contrast that makes Malmö so distinctive. Medieval churches stand alongside industrial-era landmarks, while old fortifications have become peaceful parks. My tour pass the striking Moderna Museet Malmö, admire the unique architecture of St. Pauli Church, and I walked through areas where the city’s Danish and Swedish identities still seem to coexist.
One of my favorite sections of the tour through Malmö follows the canal promenade, where Malmö’s modern skyline, affectionately known as «Malmhattan», reflects in the water. It’s here that the city’s past and present come together most vividly.
I finished my tour at Malmöhus Castle, one of Scandinavia’s oldest Renaissance fortresses. Standing within its walls, it’s easy to imagine the turbulent events that shaped southern Scandinavia, from royal intrigue and imprisonment to the historic transfer of Skåne from Denmark to Sweden.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time, arriving from nearby Copenhagen, or already know Malmö well, I hope this tour helps you see the city the way I did: as a place where every street corner has a story waiting to be told.
So grab a coffee and a kanelbulle, and start exploring yourself. My personal journey through this remarkable city is now available as a VoiceMap tour, and I’d love to share it with you. Just look at the menu to the right to find it..
